To the pseudo-orchestral strains of “Lovely Allen” (a mid-’00s music-blog hit by a band with a name not fit to print), Elliot Alderson goes on a sleep-deprived tear of Adderall-induced optimism and excitement. He’s filmed in fast forward, or with multiple versions of himself walking one behind the other, as if a single body’s not enough to contain his manic good cheer. When he climbs stairs, they light up beneath his feet. When he washes the dishes, the sun gleams off a plate like the sparkle of a cartoon character’s smile. When his pal Leon talks to him about “Seinfeld,” he starts screaming things like “It’s classic George, am I right?” in response. (“I don’t like this, bro,” Leon deadpans in return, a fine and funny moment from the M.C. turned actor Joey Bada$$.)
The freakout concludes at the basketball court as the hacker genius turned paranoid recluse sounds his barbaric yawp: “WOOOOOOOO, SLAAAAAAAM DUNNNKKK!!!” It’s a thing of goofily cathartic beauty …and it’s almost immediately cut off at the knees when he turns to us and his narration says, with weary resignation, “You’re not buying any of this either.”
This week’s episode of “Mr. Robot” takes great pleasure in these moments of unexpected, self-effacing humor. Given that the main rap against the show is its grim tone — as if seriousness and self-seriousness are conterminous phenomena — it’s a useful tool for the series to have in its arsenal. On a surface level, this installment is concerned with some of the bleakest events in the story to date: the discovery of the old-school phone hacker Romero’s corpse by his confederate Mobley, the latter’s increasing conviction that their group has been marked for death by the fearsome organization the Dark Army, Elliot’s desperate attempts to overdose himself out of his Mr. Robot persona’s clutches, his garrulous new pal Ray’s tragic and violent back story. But the writing, the performances, and the filmmaking make it seem like all involved are having the time of their lives, off-camera anyway.
Elliot’s run-up to and comedown from his high are cases in point. The former is the show at its creepiest, with frightening phone calls from the still-missing corporate cutthroat Tyrell Wellick (“I think about you a lot, Elliot. I think about that night when we became gods”) and abductions by hat-wearing men in black who are the spit and image of William S. Burroughs (a resemblance Mr. Robot puns on later when he tells Elliot he’s “burrowed” into his mind).
The latter involves a slow fraying-at-the-seams of Elliot’s visual and aural consciousness: After six days without sleep, pixelated glitches appear around the edges of objects, his friend Leon starts talking backward, lines of code flash into view, the drum of a clothes dryer spins endlessly in his enormous eyes even when he’s far from the laundry room, a ballplayer dunks on infinite repeat. Even his vicious atheist rant at the church group he’s been attending has the gravity let out when he ends it with “Please tell me I didn’t say all of that out loud” — a joke straight out of “Austin Powers” embedded in a show made with the experimental zeal of an art film. The effect is breathlessly entertaining.
The narrative structure remains rock-solid as well. The dichotomy the series has established between the psychosis and skulduggery of Elliot and company on one hand and the working-girl-in-the-big-city life of his friend Angela on the other is, in its way, as dramatic and show-defining a split as the Jimmy McGill/Mike Ehrmantraut schism on “Better Call Saul.” On that show, the two very divergent story lines — Jimmy’s spasmodic spiral into disbarment-worthy white-collar crime vs. Mike’s glacial drift into becoming a murderer for hire — enable the show to stay recognizable and real while simultaneously indulging every crime-genre flight of fancy it can cook up.
The same is true here. While Elliot hallucinates men in black force-feeding him concrete and fsociety tries to cover up its involvement with a murder victim, Angela debates whether to tell her high-powered boss Philip he’s making the wrong decision about a TV appearance, or psychs herself up for a big night out at a restaurant she can only afford through a wealthy superior’s largess. These are familiar rites of passage for young, driven office workers, and the actor Portia Doubleday ably evokes the semi-bluffing self-confidence required to get through them. Her air of consciously constructed glamour as she walks into the restaurant (through a line of protesters — hey, this is “Mr. Robot,” after all) is both convincing and endearing; the needle-scratch effect when she realizes her intimate dinner for two is some kind of business meeting with a pair of random middle managers then deflates the moment deliciously.Mr Robot Season 2 Torrent
The relatable vibe lends added menace to the evening’s sudden turn for the sinister. Once the two men depart, Philip, E Corp’s C.E.O., smilingly details their charity work, their rich family lives, their loyalty to the firm — then reveals they helped make the decision to cover up the toxic leakage that killed her mother and Elliot’s father. Wouldn’t you know it, they’re unscrupulous insider traders, too! “Ordinary men, capable of … extraordinary things,” he says, the actor Michael Cristofer drawing out the words into a blend of obscenity and admiration. And all the evidence required to put them away is right there on the disc Philip proffers her. Is it an apology? A reward? A loyalty test? It’d be unclear even if she hadn’t just gorged on the best food and wine she’s likely ever tasted.Mr Robot Season 2 Episode 3 Download Free
As F.B.I. Agent Dom DiPierro, Grace Gummer serves as a sort of bridge between the two worlds. Instinct, insight, and a little luck enable her to track fsociety down to its abandoned Coney Island headquarters. But as with Angela, her experiences are otherwise down to earth, and painfully realistic for anyone connected to the world by electronics but little else. She watches reality TV in insomniac binges, masturbates joylessly while sexting with invisible and anonymous partners on her phone and halfheartedly rallies herself in the morning with the won’t-back-down music of the proto-alt-country supergroup the Highwaymen before giving up and ordering her Amazon Alexa to turn it off. “We’re exploring what loneliness looks like today,” creator Sam Esmail told me in an interview. They’re nailing it.
